A pine tree analogy
The trunk of the tree is you and the branches are your passions and God given talents.
When God is ready, He gives you the branches He believes you can handle.
Like a pine tree, the branches at the bottom are bigger and older because they were here first. The newer branches that grow at the top of the tree and grow out sideways will eventually block all the light for the branches at the bottom of the tree.
Eventually, the large and much older branches will have to be cut down because they are dead and you have to keep the tree and the property safe and by cutting down the old branches you allow the rest of the tree to continue growing new branches and keep the tree itself safe from danger.
Allowing the older branches to be cut off once they are dead is a good thing because it allows the growth of the new branches at the top of the tree.
You do not want to be root bound at the base of the tree and not ever be able to grow your roots out farther and have new growth at the top of your tree.
The taller the tree grows the longer and wider the roots also must grow to be able to support it and stabilize it.
You do not realize how flexible a tree is, but you will notice the top of the tree sways in the wind while always trusting its deep roots in the ground will keep it safe.
Sometimes you must be like a tree and allow the wind to whistle through your branches and trust in your roots to keep you grounded and safe as you sway with the wind.
Building a firm foundation
The bottom branches are no longer being fed, don’t be like the bottom branches make sure you are feeding yourself spiritually as well.
The circles of the tree, you don’t see the damage the tree has survived until it’s dead and cut down and you see the rings inside, kind of like people you don’t see how they have been hurt on the inside.
All the new passions and desires and plans and excitements He is showing us, are the new branches growing at the top and we must allow the older branches to be cut down to allow the new ones to survive and remember to spread our roots to remain grounded but also so that we are not root bound.
